Chapter 7

* * *

Jett might not have been in the way, but he sure as hell felt like a groupie.

The band congregated in the back of Trev's store, a corner decked out with their instruments and soundproofing panels to help keep the noise at a minimum for customers. Trev introduced everyone when Jett arrived, but contrary to Monday's impromptu trip, he'd done a little research before coming face to face with more of Trev's friends.

Oscar took his hand with a wide, knowing grin, then settled himself at his drum kit with the faraway look in his eyes of an ex-lover getting a second chance. The guitar player was just as friendly, a burly man in his fifties with ginger hair and a white beard. His name was Malachi Goodwin, and he'd joined Godless Crisis after their first guitarist got busted on coke charges in LA. It had been his connections in California that had got them their big break, but he'd kept them on the straight and narrow so they could enjoy their success while it lasted. Nowadays, he worked as a "lifestyle advisor," a title that made Jett smile once his back was turned. Only in California.

The one sour note was the band's keyboard player. Electronics and synth had been a huge part of the era, and from what Jett had read, Dominic Vela had taken all the credit for "Flesh and Kisses" hitting the charts. That smug attitude prevailed, from the extra-crisp crease to his pants to the cold steel in his gray eyes when they shook hands and he realized Jett was just there because of Trev. He worked as a music producer these days, deeming his weekend cross-country jaunts for rehearsals a favor Trev would never be able to repay.

Jett didn't like him. He got the feeling the rest of the band members only tolerated him, too, though everybody was extra polite to each other.

At least for the first hour or so.

"Stop getting ahead of the beat!"

Dominic jerked around in the middle of the bridge to glare at Oscar. They had yet to make it through a single song from start to finish. At first, it'd been because their memories weren't as good as all four had claimed at the top of the morning. None of them wanted to use sheet music to play from. That arrogance was punished as they struggled to remember the right chords, the right tempo. Jett was starting to wish he'd agreed to wait for Trev back at the house rather than watch the rehearsal process, not because it wasn't fascinating, so different from anything he'd ever experienced, but to save their dignity as their frailties came to light.

Oscar set down his sticks. "Maybe if you could keep up, we wouldn't have a problem."

"Someone's spiking your fucking oxygen."

"Because that's more likely than you playing for shit. Right."

"I'm not the one who spent 1995 in a doped-up fog."

"Enough!"

Trev's sharp voice cut through the arguing, more stern than Jett had ever heard from him before.
